54 kWh Tesla Backup Gateway Install in Louisville, Kentucky
Completed in summer 2019, this significant home energy storage project dovetails nicely with an existing SMA based PV array and a classic backup generator system. Two stacks of 2 x 13.5 kWh Tesla Powerwall units run through a single BUG (Tesla Backup Gateway) to feed a whole 200A basement panel. In the event of a power outage, the Powerwalls will deploy instantly providing up to 5000 W of power at any one time or up to 7000 W of peak power for a 10-second duration.
Tesla Powerwall has the benefit of being AC coupled and does not require any specific type of solar installation equipment to function perfectly. All the Powerwall requires is a 30A breaker per unit and a reliable cell, hard-wired or Wi-Fi connection for regular monitoring and wireless system updates, as with any Tesla car operating system.
Even better is the fact that the battery will continue to charge itself if the sun is shining when the neighborhood grid is down.
